Petex: Improving Reservoir Understanding in a Mature CO₂ Flood Project

Where was the CO₂ going? MOVE's structural modelling cracked the case, mapping fractures and stress to solve a mature field's fluid mystery.

A mature producing field was experiencing unexpected CO₂ losses during an enhanced recovery programme. The reservoir was known to be naturally fractured, but the relationship between fractures, faulting and fluid flow was not fully understood.

Without a clear picture of the fracture network, it was difficult to explain why injected CO₂ was behaving differently in certain areas of the field or identify opportunities to improve future well placement.

The team needed to understand how fractures had formed, where they were most likely to occur and how they interacted with the present-day stress regime.

The PETEX team used MOVE to validate and update the structural model, reconstruct the field's geological evolution and generate calibrated fracture predictions through restoration, geomechanical modelling and stress analysis workflows.

The resulting model provided a much clearer understanding of fracture distribution and fluid flow behaviour, helping the operator improve reservoir management and make more informed decisions about future production and injection wells.
