Petex: North Sea – Surveillance and Allocation
Splitting the bill without a receipt. PETEX's Digital Oil Field platform turned murky North Sea well allocation into a trusted, physics-based system.
An offshore operator in the North Sea had a problem familiar to anyone who's tried to split a bill without a receipt: oil, condensate and gas were flowing in from multiple wells through shared pipelines to one FPSO, but nobody could confidently say how much each individual well was really producing. Testing wells one at a time was unreliable because of flow assurance issues, and gas was being injected to maintain reservoir pressure, adding another layer of complexity.
Solving this needed more than better spreadsheets — it needed a live, physics-based model of the whole field that could work out what each well was contributing, flag problems like wax or hydrate build-up before they caused a shutdown, and give every team, from reservoir engineers to operations, a single shared picture to work from.
PETEX's Digital Oil Field platform did exactly that. Within a few months of workshopping the challenge with the client's engineers, we had a system in place that delivered reliable, physics-based allocation, ongoing surveillance of the reservoir and wells, and clear optimisation guidance — turning a guessing game into a decision-making tool the whole team could trust.
