Exploration beneath complex salt structures is often challenging, particularly when seismic data quality is limited. In the Red Sea, understanding how salt movement had shaped the basin was essential for reducing uncertainty around several exploration targets.
The key challenge was distinguishing between multiple possible structural interpretations and determining how salt movement, subsidence, uplift and erosion had interacted through time.
The team needed to understand not only what the basin looked like today, but how it had evolved to reach its present-day geometry.
PETEX specialists used MOVE to combine restoration, sediment thickness analysis and kinematic modelling workflows, reconstructing the structural development of the basin and testing alternative interpretations of the salt-related deformation.
The resulting workflows provided a clearer understanding of salt-related deformation, quantified key geological processes such as downslope translation and subsidence, and helped reduce uncertainty surrounding the geometry and evolution of the exploration prospects.
